History of Renaissance Christian Church

In the fall of 1997 a small group of friends (12 in all) gathered in Pastor Rick & Joel’s living room for prayer and direction. This small group was the genesis of what was to become Renaissance Christian Church.

On Sunday, January 18th, 1998 the first public worship service was conducted at the West End Community Centre in downtown Vancouver. In April of this same year the church was incorporated.

There were many firsts in that year: Our first baptismal service; our first Easter Agape meal. our first entry in the Annual Vancouver Pride Society Parade and festival; our first Thanksgiving service; and our first annual “Christmas Carols by Candlelight” service.

A Benevolent Fund was established. We began conducting “Embracing the Truth” series. We raised money for our Cuba Care program. We also inaugurated “Koinonia Classes” for those wishing to become members of the church. Covenant ceremonies were conducted for a number of couples. We sponsored our first World Vision. child – Jose Portillo Castellon

These were ground–breaking days as we established the foundation of the church.

In 2000 Renaissance moved to the facilities of St. Michael’s Anglican Church (409 East Broadway) in Vancouver, BC. We continue to meet and worship there. In December of that year we began sponsorship of a child through World Vision – Kenneth Gaitan.

A successful Church retreat was held at Camp Jubilee. Todd Ferrell of The Evangelical Network was our weekend facilitator.

In 2004 Renaissance received approval to perform weddings under the Marriage Act of BC. Currently there are 3 registered religious representatives qualified to conduct marriage ceremonies.
After seven years of ministry Pastor Rick & Joel resigned leadership of Renaissance.

In 2004 Jim Kelly assumed pastoral leadership of Renaissance and in 2005 we relocated our services from the church auditorium to this beautiful sanctuary.

In 2008 Pastor Rick returned to Renaissance as Co-Pastor with Pastor Jim Kelly. In 2009, Renaissance became a member of the Evangelical Network.

In 2013 Pastor Rick retired from full time ministry and Reverend Barbara MacLennan joined with Pastor Jim as assistant pastor.

In 2016 Pastors Jim, Barbara and Rick continue to lead Renaissance Church, and the future is bright.
