Our Pastors

James Kelly:  I am a pastor of Renaissance Christian Church, Vancouver BC, and I know that God's hand has been on me since my birth.  The Bible says “All things work together for good to them that love God, and are the called according to His purpose”.    All things!   That includes my late mother’s love, the abandonment of my father when I was in infant, the death of my brother, the discovery of my other brother who had been given up for adoption prior to my birth, my Bible College education, my airline/travel career and especially my salvation and healing.   I have been very blessed, having had the opportunity to work in BC, Alberta, other areas of Canada, Hawaii, Ethiopia and even a short stint in Australia.  I have also traveled to all continents (except Antarctica).

There is much to my journey that I would like to share but I can not do so in the space of a brief testimonial.    My world view can be summed up with the words of Paul who said, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor demons, neither the present, nor the future, nor any powers, neither height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”     My life is a witness to the fact that God does love and care for the disenfranchised in society for such was I.

Barbara MacLennan:  I achieved the Order of Ministry of Ordination within the denomination of Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, under the Bachelor's Degree equivalency program through Samaritan College for Religious Studies, Los Angeles, California.   This was followed by Master program studies at St. Stephen's Theological College, University of Alberta.   I was licensed to practice as Christian clergy prior to my ordination, during which time I pastored an MCC church in Edmonton, Alberta.

My studies before ministry included 1st year university, nursing, art and Criminal Justice and professional investigation.   Diverse indeed but all have added to my own development, both intellectually and spiritually.   I have travelled all over the USA, worked in two states and have worked in Australia.   Other travels have included Fiji, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Japan and a sabbatical in China.

In my capacity as a minister I have been involved in Human/Civil rights for GLBT and others as needed.   I have also had experience in Prison, Street, Aids, Christian Clowning, Women's and Ecumenical ministry.  I am now semi-retired and am Assistant Pastor at Renaissance Christian Church.

Rick Morcombe was the founding pastor of Renaissance Christian Church.   At the age of fifteen, he had a conversion experience that resulted in his call to Christian ministry.   After graduation from Bible College in 1973, Rick pastored a number of Pentecostal churches in British Columbia.   It was in the winter of 1989 that he had his "dark night of the soul" when the church he was pastoring found out that he was gay. As a result, he lost his church, ministry and credentials with his denomination.   Broken in spirit and heart he found his way to Liberty Community Church where he found renewed faith and hope.   In 1992 he became the pastor of Liberty.   After five years of ministry there he  started Renaissance Christian Church.   In 2006 after seven years of ministry at Renaissance, Rick took a sabbatical.   Jim Kelly was called to the Ministry of Renaissance.   In September of 2008, Rick returned as co-pastor and laboured for five additional years,  resigning from ministry leadership in 2013.   He continues to be an active and important part of the leadership of Renaissance Church.
